A former peasants' house dating from the 19th century, the Taunerhaus remained unoccupied for many years. In December 2015, the owners donated the property to the Vacances au Cœur du Patrimoine foundation. It took five years to finance and restore this monument. Since autumn 2020, the Taunerhaus has been open to holidaymakers.
The Taunerhaus is a two-storey half-timbered building. The facade is decorated with a very well preserved “Ründi”, typical of the Bernese region. This semi-circular arch under the awning was an architectural feature of prestigious buildings and suggests that the builders of the Taunerhaus were members of the clergy. The Tenn (a space used for threshing) the barn and the stable for small livestock evidence the modest uses of the property. A stone basin dating from 1850 has been preserved.
The Taunerhaus takes its name from its former residents. Until the 19th century, small farmers were known as "Tauner" (meaning day labourer) a word derived from "Tagelöhner" which translates as "paid by the day". Coming from the most disadvantaged sector of society, their estates included a few plots of cereal crops and pastures which were not enough to feed a family. In order to supplement their income, they worked by the day with large farmers or on estates belonging to the clergy. The oldest part of the Taunerhaus dates back to 1850. With time and alterations, the house was extended and assumed its current form around 1940.
Guests of the Taunerhaus will discover nearly two hundred years of Bernese architectural history. On their arrival, they are welcomed by the house manager who will explain the history and characteristics of the monument in more detail. The manager also remains available throughout the stay should guests have any questions. Thick stone walls, creaking floorboards, the smell of the wooden stove, and the view of the medieval church and the village fountain make a stay at the Taunerhaus an unforgettable experience. It is decorated with local craft objects and furniture by Swiss designers. The minimalist décor allows the architecture to take centre stage.
Walk the Hofmannsfluh, a hiking trail in the Budligwald. From the church of Vinelz on the hill, take the footpath towards Lüscherz which crosses a magnificent forest overlooking Lake Biel. The vineyard footpath from Bienne to La Neuveville gives a full picture of the winegrowing profession. At the southern foot of the Jura, this picturesque path cuts through the hillsides of Lake Bienne for nearly fifteen kilometres, the slopes of which are widely exploited for winegrowing. It offers an authentic walk punctuated with the discovery of small authentic villages in Douanne and Gléresse where visitors can try the local wines.
The Taunerhaus offers large spaces for up to six guests. On the first floor, there is a spacious kitchen/dining room in the tenn and a living room that leads to the smaller double bedroom. Upstairs, there is a bedroom with a double bed, a single bedroom, and an alcove with a single bed, a bathroom and a separate toilet. In winter, the house is heated by underfloor heating installed in the tenn and a historic tiled stove. A lounge area in front of the house and another in the old barn allow guests to relax comfortably outside.
