Our opinion

As though striving to watch over the nature, the house fixes the horizon and reigns from the middle of its territory of lawns and meadows dotted with trees. Virginia creepers and flowers climb up the facade, join the pergola and spread up to the roof of gently sloping Roman tiles. With these adornments, the property blends into a landscape where the light dances between the Périgord and the Charente, which are very close by. Inside, the bright and colourful rooms invite guests to live to the rhythm of a simple life, punctuated by precious moments of tranquillity and the discovery of a rich and varied heritage in the surroundings. Guests will only struggle to find the right balance between indulging in idleness and cultural visits!

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

We are a Franco-German family. About forty-five years ago, we came to the Dordogne for the first time to visit a friend who had settled in Lusignac. We then discovered the Périgord which very quickly enchanted us. We gradually acquired four houses, including this one known as "La Gravette".

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The house features stone and rubble facades. It is surrounded by large terraces, one of which has a pergola. The property only has one floor, but the attic has been converted into a 174m² living space. The roof is covered with Roman tiles. Accessible via a long driveway, the house is quietly located on a hill with a wide view of the meadows and the picturesque landscapes of the Dronne.

What is its history ?

La Gravette was built in the 18th century on the site of the former Roman colony of Bersacum. The house has been inhabited over the centuries by the administrators of the Mas de Montet chateau. Now a private property, the chateau was once frequented by President François Mitterrand who organised private meetings here with his ministers, conducted state affairs or simply enjoyed the calm while walking with his Labradors along the wide paths.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Located in the centre of a two-hectare plot, the house has a thirteen-metre swimming pool with an outdoor shower and a pool house with a light-filled terrace covered in cedar wood. We have restored the property with the upmost care and with respect for the smallest details in features such as the handcrafted tiles, the noble materials, and the custom-designed elements. We have preserved its history while providing modern comforts, and have decorated it with unusual objects we hunted down ourselves and paintings by painters from this region that we love.

Places you would personally recommend

The prehistoric cave of Vilars, near Brantôme, is lesser known but incredibly beautiful and interesting. It offers a sound and light show that takes you back 200,000 years. The lakes located in the middle of the large pine forests between Ribérac and Montpon. A particular favourite is the Grand Etang de La Jemaye in the ancestral forest of La Double. A visit to the monolithic church of Aubeterre followed by lunch in the shaded market square. Saint-Jean-de-Côle is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. It boasts a set of medieval village houses which converge towards a central square and a castle. Foie gras and confits produced by Didier Rafin at La Barde Lusignac. The traditional weekly markets are not to be missed: Monday in Chalais, Wednesday in Périgueux, Thursday in Saint-Astier, Friday in Ribérac, Saturday in Saint-Aulaye and Sunday in Aubeterre and Bergerac.
