In Switzerland, in the canton of Graubünden, a baroque house
and its tower in the heart of a mountain village

Our opinion

Like a work of art saved from destruction, the house looks all the more beautiful in that it hides nothing from the wounds of the past. Worn steps, dirty walls of the old kitchen, but also painted woodwork, paneled walls, wood stoves, everything here has been so rightly enhanced, that it almost feels like a museum ... where you could pleasantly stay. Sentry erected in the heart of the mountain village, overlooking the Grisons valley where the Anterior Rhine winds, the Türalihus seems to have known everything, splendor and oblivion, and to keep everything to share it. Lovers of the Swiss Alps and carefully restored houses will be delighted here.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

Before the foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal acquired the Türalihus in 2007, it had stood empty for over 60 years and was increasingly falling apart. It is thanks to the village of Valendas that new partners were sought in the course of the village revitalization and that the Foundation drew attention to the listed building. The Foundation is very proud of its collaboration with Valendas and of the successful, gentle restoration of the monument, in which today holidaymakers can experience the exceptional architectural culture of the Canton of Graubünden.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The original building of the Türalihus was built in 1485. On the north side, a first extension building with a bricked ground floor and a transom construction was built a little later. It is assumed that the original building was supplemented by an external two-storey staircase around 1554. The Türalihus owes its melodious name (Türali = tower) to this tower-like staircase. The shape of the house visible today is from the baroque reconstruction in 1775, when the main house and the stair tower were extended by a further floor. The stately facade paintings and decorations were also created during this time. The interior of the house was supplemented at that time with splendid parlours with painted panelling and bricked stoves.

What is its history ?

The stately house with its characteristic stair tower stands self-confidently on the main street of Valendas, where the other mansions of the wealthy bourgeois families of days gone by are also located. With its numerous traces, it tells of the history when some villagers came into wealth as confectioners and mercenaries. According to the investigation by the Grisons Monument Conservation Society, there were countless changes of ownership before the well-known Flims architect Valerio Olgiati sold the house, which had been vacant for decades, to the foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal in 2007. The restoration of the listed building commissioned by the foundation and implemented by the architects Capaul & Blumenthal was completed in 2014. The aim was to preserve the original building fabric and the unique character of the house.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Guests of the Türalihus experience 600 years of Grisons architectural history during their visit. On arrival, they are guided through the house by the guest advisor and learn more about the history and architectural features of the monument. Thick stone walls, creaking floorboards, the smell of the wood stove and the view from the windows of one of the most beautiful mountain villages in Switzerland and the magnificent mountain landscape make a stay at the Türalihus an unforgettable experience. Both apartments are furnished with Swiss designer furniture and objects from regional manufacturers. The minimalist furnishings allow the architecture to take centre stage. All amenities are provided for. The guest advisor is available to the holiday guests for questions during their stay.

Places you would personally recommend

Valendas is a perfect starting point for hikes and excursions, such as the Riunalta Ridge Gorge. Winter sports enthusiasts can reach the Laax ski area in only 20 minutes by car from the monument. We recommend a guided tour in Valendas where you can experience the historic architecture and history of the mountain village at first hand (you can do this on your own with a map, but you can also book a guided tour.) Highly recommended is the "Gasthaus am Brunnen", which is located right next to the large wooden fountain on the village square and offers seasonal and regional delicacies. In the small village shop you can buy fresh regional products all year round.

The Türalihus has two holiday apartments: the Türalihus 1, on the first floor, can accommodate four people and the Türalihus 2, on the second, can accommodate seven guests. The apartments can be rented together or separately. Both are equipped with modern kitchens and toilets. They are furnished with classic pieces of Swiss design. The result is a harmonious combination of the past and the modern. Karin Briefer of Selected Interiors was responsible for this arrangement. Our recognition also goes to the companies Horgenglarus and Lehni AG. The Türalihus 1 holiday apartment, on the first floor, is the smaller of the two living units and offers space for four people. Street side is a large room decorated with floral patterns and heated by an imposing tower stove. The original plan has been preserved and the floors, woodwork, paintings and the oven carefully preserved. The kitchen, which still has the old fireplace, has been completed with a modern installation and an island specially designed for the Türalihus. A spacious bathroom has also been fitted. The two bedrooms, each with a double bed, are at the rear of the house, in the old storage spaces. The Türalihus is a historic building, a monument. Although it conforms to modern technical standards, we draw your attention to the fact that certain functional elements such as door and window closing systems, stair railings and step height do not correspond to current standards and may constitute a source of danger.
